AG Grid is, deservedly, the default answer when an enterprise team needs a serious data grid. It is mature, feature-complete, well-documented, and battle-tested across thousands of production applications. If you are evaluating grids, you should take it seriously — and this article does.

We are not going to pretend GridStorm is strictly better. The two tools make different trade-offs, and the right choice depends on your constraints around licensing, bundle size, framework strategy, and how much of the grid you want to own. What this article gives you is an honest feature comparison and then a concrete, step-by-step migration path if you decide GridStorm fits your situation.

Where AG Grid wins today: ecosystem maturity, breadth of out-of-the-box enterprise features, and the depth of community knowledge you can search for when you hit an edge case. If you need integrated charting or server-side pivoting right now and budget for the Enterprise license is not a concern, AG Grid is a safe, excellent choice.

Where GridStorm tends to win: cost predictability (there is no per-seat license to negotiate as your team grows), bundle size for applications that only need a subset of features, accessibility out of the box, and the ability to read and extend the entire codebase because every package is open source. The headless model also means you fully own rendering, which some teams value and others would rather not deal with.

Choose deliberately. The migration below assumes you have weighed these and decided to move.

Migrating column definitions

AG Grid column definitions and GridStorm column definitions share the same mental model — a column has a field, a header, sizing, and behavior flags — so the translation is mostly mechanical.

A typical AG Grid column array looks like this:

The mapping is direct: field becomes id, headerName becomes header, pinned: 'left' becomes pin: 'left', and AG Grid's named filter components (agNumberColumnFilter) become GridStorm's filter type strings ('number'), which are provided by the filtering plugin. The cell-class callback receives the row object rather than a params wrapper.

Migrating cell renderers

This is the area where the headless model is most visibly different. In AG Grid you typically register a framework component as a cellRenderer. In GridStorm, because the adapter owns rendering, you provide a render function (or a framework component through the adapter) and the core simply tells it which row and column to draw.

The practical rule when porting renderers: anything that was JSX inside an AG Grid cell renderer component moves into the column's cell function nearly unchanged. You lose AG Grid's renderer registry indirection and gain direct, typed access to the value and row.

Migrating sorting and filtering

In AG Grid, sorting and filtering are largely configured by flags on column defs and handled internally. In GridStorm those behaviors live in plugins you compose onto the grid, which keeps the core small and your bundle lean.

The migration steps in order:

  1. Enumerate which AG Grid features you actually use — sorting, filtering, pinning, selection, clipboard, grouping.
  2. Import the corresponding GridStorm plugins; skip the ones you do not need (this is what shrinks your bundle).
  3. Convert column defs as shown above, moving sortable and filter flags onto the columns the plugins read.
  4. Port cell renderers into cell functions.
  5. Replace AG Grid's onGridReady/API access with GridStorm's grid instance methods for programmatic sort, filter, and scroll.
  6. Re-test against your real dataset, especially the 100K-row paths where virtualization behavior matters.

When to migrate (and when not to)

  • Migrate if per-developer licensing cost is a growing line item, if bundle size matters for your application, if you need WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility without bolting it on, or if you want a fully open-source grid you can read and extend.
  • Stay on AG Grid if you depend heavily on its Enterprise-only features (integrated charting, server-side pivoting), if your team's productivity is tied to its mature ecosystem, or if a migration's cost outweighs the benefit for a stable, working application.
  • Run both during transition: GridStorm's headless core lets you migrate one screen at a time rather than in a single big-bang cutover.

Migrations are never free, and a working grid has real value.
